I got Grandma when I was eleven & she was eleven! She's older than I am by a little--Sissy turned 29 on Wednesday. Mama gave her a party. She hates to have her picture taken. She looks like a furry bunny to me!

Last night N & I went up to the ole workplace to see Doomtree artists Dessa & P.O.S, & some other kid named Grieves. None of whom I'd really heard before the show. I like rap/hip hop when it's done well, meaning when the language (too often times forced rhyme... wanna get it right?...see Outkast circa Aquemini) is done well. It's hard to do with a beat behind you I can only imagine...last night it (the words) was done well.
Dessa is the only female & one/fifth member of Doomtree, situated in Minneapolis. She studied writing, has a background in spoken word poetry, & got her degree in philosophy. After years of rejection slips from poetry journals & presses, Doomtree collective put out her first book (& their first book--usually a record label puts out solely records I'm sure) called Spiral Bound, which I want to read. This is a different kind of "poetry" than I'd normally read, but what it lacks "academically" (la la la) it makes up for in soul & puts that in the forefront, honestly & vulnerably. I appreciate this. I wish all "poets" at their "poetry readings" would put a little more of this (soul) out there. After all, what are we writing for / what are we writing?

It's warm out. I have every door in the house open. Spring cleaning, out with the cold, start bringing the hanging plants out to their nail posts round the house's sides, & get the bird stuff ready: goldfinch sock, hummingbird feeder, set the grill up!
LA was a beautiful getaway: beautiful baby Lyla, spritely walk in runyan canyon where I about peed my leg I had to go sooo bad (jeez, I'm still sore today from those hills--), & nice time with family. Mandy you are doing such a good job with Miss LG! She's so sweet & wonderful! The pic is of us from Valentine's Day, where LG wears her heart dress in honor of loooooove.
I feel creative. My 1st fiction wksp was really great & I'm enjoying writing it, think I'll keep with it awhile. Thanks to such support, fam, sugar, & also MMM who offers me writing/office space/garden/wine/tea/gumbo/anything/even anger for not organizing my life more around the writing. I'm trying. In honor of my good pal Andrew M. who tells me today via text msg: "I'm working on a novel & it's lonely"--yep, but it's good lonely work, couldn't imagine anything different.
Just finished an interview with Kristen N (my lovely book designer) for the late March issue of Trickhouse. I'm so excited to see it!
Just looked at final galleys for BEH & am excited to be finally done with it--off to the printers! I'm so glad: it's been a wonderful experience but over a year of hard work just editing & finishing up everything. Sigh, happily.
In other news, it snowed over the weekend in south Georgia! First time since I was a kid--when Mandy & I slid down the hill by our house in cardboard boxes. Yeeeeeee!

United Colors of Benetton (i love!) is doing an open global casting call for their next ad campaign. Wish I had some truly, truly cool photos of myself I would enter. Stiff competition. Nonetheless it is fun to look at all of the entries thus far today! I love the way Iranian women are dressing.

so it's feb. tucson is rainy. consistent rain, all through the end of january til on into today, feb.
yesterday, for my fiction class, i had to turn in my first packet of work--16 pages, which i managed to do in 2 weeks. pretty impressive. it sort of feels weird though. it's certainly unnatural, but i do like trying to sustain a narrative, being it's something i've never done before, esp in poems. :) i'll let you know how my first workshop goes.
i work tonight at the bar--it's bowerbirds, which are supposed to be kinda neat. come if you have time--8pm.
watched some good movies lately: up!, the opposite of sex, wristcutters: a love story. those are the good ones.
the not-so-good ones: legion. though in a weird kitchy way i'm glad i saw it.
goodbye as the french say au revoir
